On January 13, 1993, the ferry MF Jan Heweliusz left Świnoujście for another voyage to the Swedish city of Ystad. There were sixty-four people on board. Due to a failure of the stern door, the ferry had a delay which the crew tried to make up for. Unfortunately, an unusually strong storm broke out in the Baltic Sea at night. As a result, Heweliusz sank, and only a few people were saved from the entire crew. Passengers died in the icy waves of the sea.
